What do you mean by friction drive?

A friction drive is a mechanical transmission type that gives CLIP its power and unique plug and play features. When you engage CLIP, the small roller on CLIP transmits torque directly to your front tire, driving you forward without any need for complex sprockets or gears. Friction drive is not new, it’s been around since the early 1900’s in the form of the Lambert drive to the significantly more famous VeloSolex.

The VeloSolex bicycle was conceived during World War II and marketed in 1946, with 8 million being sold between 1946 and 1988 in France and internationally.

How far can I go with CLIP?

CLIP was designed keeping in mind the urban commuter and to encourage more urban commuters to make the switch to biking to work.
With CLIP you will comfortably be able to bike a distance of up to a 10-15 mile commute in ~45 mins.

How long will it take to charge my CLIP?

It takes approximately a total of 40 minutes to recharge your CLIP from 0 to 100%.
Most top -ups when you use CLIP regularly take between 10-20 minutes

Does it work without a phone app?

YES!
However CLIP is designed to pair with the CLIP phone app with many exciting features we will announce soon.
Watch this space for the launch of our upcoming iOS/Android companion app.

Does CLIP's friction-drive cause higher tire wear?

NO
Tire wear only occurs when there’s slippage in contact between the friction-drive roller and the tire. We solve this by designing some clever algorithms that will alway deliver the optimal torque at the right RPM to your tire in order to prevent slippage.

How does CLIP perform in the wet?

This generation of CLIP will work best on dry to semi-dry roads and we advise against riding it during a rain.
If you are looking to ride in the rain, we advise you to wait until the next generation of CLIP.

Safety

How fast can I ride with CLIP?

CLIP is designed to make biking easier – not faster. That said – CLIP will make your bike faster. CLIP stays within the Class 1 classification of e-bikes
  • Class 1: eBikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
  • Class 2: eBikes that also have a maximum speed of 20 mph, but are throttle-assisted.
  • Class 3: eBikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.All classes limit the motor’s power to 1 horsepower (750W).

Do I need to wear a helmet while riding with CLIP?

We strongly advise it! Helmets will help mitigate specific head injuries when a crash happens. However we must work together with bike advocacy organizations such as People for Bikes here in the US to help find ways to prevent those crashes—especially collisions between cars and bikes—from happening at all.

  • Bicycle helmet reduces the risk of head injury by 48% and the risk of serious head injury by a full 60%.
  • Bicycle helmet reduces the risk of face injury by 23% without increasing the risk of cervical spine injury.

Another convincing argument for wearing a helmet was stated in a 2018 study of several universities from the Czech Republic. A scientific team looked at the circumstances of the deaths of 119 cyclists who died on Czech roads from 1995 to 2013. Pathologists examined every single case in order to determine if a helmet would help the cyclist survive or not. They had detailed police reports at hand. Results showed that helmets would help in cases where there was no other party involved in the accident, such as bike falls or collisions with obstacles. The research concluded that 44 cyclists (37%) out of the 119 could have survived had they worn a helmet. On the other hand, helmets would be of no use in case of high-speed crashes, especially if there were motorised vehicles or trains involved. The study advises cyclists to wear helmets, but at the same time warns them to avoid certain situations and not to rely on some miraculous power of the helmet.
