The CLIP feels like a game-changer: Almost any regular pedal-powered bicycle can become an electric-boosted battery-powered machine with the addition of the Clip attachment.

Once it was on, the Clip felt intuitive to use from my first ride. I noticed the device’s wheel has an auto-roll feature — the center wheel slightly powers your front tire (as it’s rolling) even when you’re not pedaling.

Both the local bike shop where I picked up my CLIP review unit and the company behind the product offered to walk me through installation, but I turned them down. I wanted to see how true their claims of "easy to set up" actually are. Verdict: extremely true.

Clip, a startup based in Brooklyn, New York, has come up with its own twist on the Solex. Its only product, the eponymously named Clip, is a friction drive unit that attaches to the front fork of any bicycle, turning it into an e-bike.

I tested the Explorer model and used it to bike to church and to a couple of meetings, and didn't feel sweaty or out of breath when I arrived. I felt the CLIP's pull at the very beginning of my ride as the mechanical roller synced up with the bike's tire, but most of the time I was pedaling at a steady rate in "auto-roll" mode.

The new device arrived a few days later and worked like a charm, adding oomph to the Carmen. For college kids riding across a leafy, flat campus after a bookish day or tired commuters crossing the Brooklyn Bridge after working in Manhattan, this would be a great turbo-charged ride home.

A particular conversion device we like is the Clip friction-drive motor. This sub-10-pound motor mounts to the front wheel of most commuter, city, road, or gravel bikes (basically, bikes without suspension forks) and provides up to 15 mph pedaling assistance.
